World Trade Institute

The WTI, established in 1999, is one of the world's leading research centres and training institutes in international trade law. The WTI's training and education programmes are both offered in Switzerland and abroad. It has become increasingly apparent that there is a huge deficit in knowledge and expertise, particularly in developing countries, in this relatively new and under-studied field. For this reason, the WTI is now offering students from all over the world the possibility to follow one of its training programmes. It is hoped that this programme will make a contribution to bridging the knowledge gap and redressing some of the asymmetries between developed and developing countries in the role that they play in the world trading system.

Programme Fee

The programme fee for the distance learning programme is £3750.

Selection Process

The WTI accepts a maximum of 40 students per programme round. The principal criterion for admission is a sound academic and/or professional background in a discipline relating to the distance learning programme, preferably law, economics or international relations. The selection process is non-discriminatory as to country of origin, nationality, gender and age. We shall, however, seek a good mix of different professional and academic backgrounds.

The Application

The application package, which must be submitted to CMP Publishing and the WTI simultaneously, consists of the application form, a résumé, academic certificates in English (if these are not in English, please provide official translations) and two letters of recommendation. Applicants must submit English-language transcripts from each college or university attended showing their academic records as well as degrees earned and the dates these were awarded. A supplement explaining the grading system must accompany the transcript. Current students or recent graduates should submit letters of recommendations from two teachers. Applicants who have completed their degree more than three years ago should submit a letter from a current or former employer. Letters from family members, friends, or persons who are not well acquainted with the applicant should not be submitted.

The Application Process

Applicants will be notified of their admission in writing within 3 weeks after their application materials have been received. Upon this notification, applicants shall be required to formally accept or decline the place offered to them. Applicants who decide to accept the place shall pay a registration fee of £50. This fee shall be counted against the tuition fee. Upon admission, each student shall sign a declaration indicating that he or she is fully aware that any work to be submitted has to be prepared by the student him-/herself without help by third parties and that he or she is aware that the finding of circumstances different from this can lead to the student’s exclusion from the programme or the withdrawal of a certificate even after it has been granted.

English Language Requirements

It is imperative that applicants have a sufficient level of English-language proficiency to be able to work and pass exams in English. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that they possess a good working knowledge of English and the ability to express themselves well both in writing and orally.

Reactivation of a Previous Application

The Office of Admissions retains applications for one year only. If you have previously applied to the distance learning programme, you may reactivate your application by submitting additional documents to supplement those already in our files.

Deadline

Applications must be received at least 6 weeks prior to the start of the programme round for which you wish to apply. Applications submitted thereafter can be considered only if places on the programme are still available.
