World Trade Institute

The WTI, established in 1999, is one of the world's leading research centres and training institutes in international trade law. The WTI's training and education programmes are both offered in Switzerland and abroad. It has become increasingly apparent that there is a huge deficit in knowledge and expertise, particularly in developing countries, in this relatively new and under-studied field. For this reason, the WTI is now offering students from all over the world the possibility to follow one of its training programmes. It is hoped that this programme will make a contribution to bridging the knowledge gap and redressing some of the asymmetries between developed and developing countries in the role that they play in the world trading system.
Demonstration Module: Foundations, Structure and Operation of the WTO

Demonstration Module: Foundations, Structure and Operation of the WTO

Description

The GATT came into being provisionally in 1948 and remained in force, as a de facto international organization, until the creation of the WTO in 1995. The latter incorporated the GATT (now GATT 1994), which considerably expanded coverage of subject matters, and was truly established in the form of an international organization with legal personality. The establishment of the WTO therefore does not mark a point of departure but a continuum, building upon the experience gained in over almost fifty years.

The module provides an introduction to the foundations, structures and operation of the WTO. Section A will provide an insight into the metamorphosis of the GATT 1947 which forms the foundations of the WTO. Section B will elaborate on the subjects and the scope of WTO law. This is followed by a brief description of the structure and instruments of the WTO provided in section C. Finally, section D discusses the sources and interpretation of WTO law.

The module integrates theoretical knowledge and practical experience from GATT/WTO dispute settlement cases.
